March is National Nutrition Month, a time to reflect on our eating habits and be mindful of what our body needs to perform at its best. Nutrition is about nourishing our bodies on a consistent basis and eating foods that provide energy and make us feel great.
There is no one diet that is right for everyone. Thus, it is important to follow a healthy eating plan that supports each unique lifestyle. For instance, busy moms that often eat on the run should keep nutritious foods on hand such as fresh fruit, nuts whole wheat crackers and string cheese that will hold up in a purse for up to four hours.
Those that follow a vegetarian diet should focus on protein-rich foods that include quinoa, green peas, chia seeds, beans, nuts and nut butter. Eating a wide variety of whole, minimally processed foods will ensure we are nourishing our body to keep going strong all day long. However, don’t forget to enjoy an indulgence every once in a while. Nutrition is all about finding the balance that is uniquely right for each individual.
Not only is what we eat important, but also how we eat it. We live in an era where distractions are present at every turn, and sitting down to enjoy our food becomes a luxury. Taking the time to eat with awareness allows us to tune into the body’s hunger and fullness cues. It is amazing what we can discover when we take the time to sit with ourselves and enjoy a breakfast or mid-afternoon snack.
